Downtown Montreal has not always been where it is now. Formerly in Old Montreal, it progressively but rapidly moved to St. Antoine Ward, the "New Town" before it became known as downtown. Later, a French downtown, more east, developped to become the cultural heart of the city. With St. Catherine street as the main artery, both in the east and west sides, with its stores, underground city and its festivals, downtown is surely the heart of Montreal.
